Dealers often wanted to jurisdiction for extra work that the automaker doesn’t require. Consumer Reports discovered that when comparing the worship army items included in quotes with the maintenance lists in the owner manuals.

DIALING FOR DOLLARS -- The maintenance schedule in the owner manual is the automaker’s prescription for keeping the conduit in good condition. Those regular checkups should be performed at the proper mileage intervals. But although the automaker sets the schedule, person dealers set their prices.


Consumer Reports called several dealers in the Chicago, Los Angeles and New York metro areas and asked their payment for a specific scheduled- maintenance interval and which service items they included. In each city, Consumer Reports chose dealers that were in affiliated close proximity. They asked for the 30,000-mile maintenance service for a 2005 Toyota Camry, the 60,000-mile assignment for a 2004 Ford Explorer or the 120,000-mile service for a 2003 Honda Civic.
